Good wages for good work?

15.12.2014

On Thursday, the 20th of November 2014, Anita Varghese ( an environmentalist )and Shikua Buaitacharji  ( a human rights activist) from India visited our English class in order  to teach us some interesting things about the Adivasi people, the indigenous people in India  living in the Indian forest and living on forest products.

We discovered their way of living and found out, that they depend on the bees living in the forest. The Adivasi people harvest the honey without any protection and under the hardest circumstances to sell it later.  We learned about their ideology which consists of practise, belief and knowledge.

After having watched a short film about honey-hunting we split the class in 2 groups and started discussions about the problems the Adivasi people are confronted with and talked about the significance of cultural knowledge. It’s important to find out the story behind a product as for example the wild honey  which is important for the livelihood of the indigenous people in India.

We really appreciated this project which was initiated by our English teacher Mrs Siebert and hope that there will be more of them soon to come.
